If I were Prime Minister.....

“If I were Prime Minister, Mauritius would have progressed far more than it is now and changes would have been made in the Constitution.”

Through this article, Narayan Jumnoodoo presents his personal vision of governance, national development and the importance of fairness, meritocracy and independence of institutions.

  1. A Prime Minister shall be allowed to stand candidate for only two “mandats”, that is for not more than 10 years. Opportunity should be given to other Mauritians to become Prime Minister since Mauritius belongs to every citizen.
  2. Recruitment in the civil service would have been made according to someone’s merits, and not based on ethnics or to his allegiance to any political party.
  3. It would have been a part of my motto: “Putting the right man in the right place”.
  4. I would have created massive jobs through the modernization of the existing pillars and introduction of new ones so that there would have remained no person unemployed.
  5. I would have never used the MBC as a tool for the propaganda of my party. It would have ever been independent.
  6. All public institutions would have been independent.
