Reforms in our Constitution

The past and the present must give place to the future. In this context, reforms should be brought in our Constitution for better administration of our country.

I am putting forward some reforms as follows:

1. The President of the Republic of Mauritius should be given more powers, amongst them to dissolve the National Assembly at any appropriate time in the interest of the country.
2. The President of the Republic of Mauritius should henceforth be elected by universal suffrage for a period of four years.
3. The post of Vice-President should be abolished.
4. There should be the existence of a Senate.
5. The Best Loser System should be abolished to bring about unity among Mauritians.
6. Political parties practicing a policy of communalism or involved directly or indirectly in religious activities should not be allowed to participate either in general, municipal or rural elections.
7. No candidate or political party should be allowed to bribe any elector or agent in any constituency and in any election so as to render elections free and fair.
8. All ballot papers should be transparent.
9. Financing political parties should not be allowed. Money should not be used as a weapon to win elections.
10. Oriflammes and banderoles should not be placed in any part of Mauritius during elections so as not to pollute our environment.
11. More autonomy should be given to Municipalities and District Councils.
